A Place for all her Spice

A customer bought a new house with a walk-in pantry. Problem was, the pantry was dark and dingy, with overlapping particle board shelves and no where near the storage space needed for this home-owner's extensive spice collection. Jen met with the owner, listened to what was needed, and went to work sketching  a possible design. (As an aside, I think she just wanted an excuse to play with the kids' watercolors...)

After getting the go-ahead, Jen started work dismantling the current shelving, The next step was a thorough cleaning of the walls to prep for a new coat of paint. (A new coat of paint can completely change the look of a room, and it's a fun possibly DIY kind of task. If you tackle the job yourself, don't forget this very important step- clean the walls thoroughly, patch any damage, and finish the surface to match the texture of the rest, all before touching a can of paint!) The accent walls in this pantry visually extend the size of an otherwise potentially cramped space and provide contrast making the shelves easier to search.

Highlights to this minor remodel include new shelving and storage racks for bottles and spices. Wooden storage bins and buckets at various levels complement the step-stool making the entire space accessible. If your pantry is in need of an organizational update, consider adding some easy storage solutions even on the shelves themselves- that way you're not sorting through layers of food-stuffs looking for the back-up peanut-butter.
